AA 4-star 18th-century coaching inn in Yorkshire Dales National Park

Dining

The on-site restaurant holds an AA Rosette award for its cuisine. The menu changes seasonally and uses ingredients from trusted local suppliers, with dishes such as the Shooters Pie and cheese pie. Specialty beers and award-winning ales from Thwaites are served at the bar, and a unique afternoon tea with a Yorkshire Dales twist is offered.

Accommodation

Rooms are available in the main 18th-century inn, a cottage adjoining the inn, and the Lister Barn, a two-minute walk away. The Lister Barn rooms have access to a residents lounge with a log burner and a communal kitchen dresser with teas, coffees, and fresh milk. Some rooms have stunning views of the surrounding Dales, and dog-friendly accommodations are available in all room types for an additional fee.

Pet-Friendly Amenities

Dogs are allowed in all rooms for an additional fee and receive homemade dog biscuits and a doggy sausage at breakfast. The property provides a dog wash near the barn for muddy paws after walks. Pet owners have access to local walking routes from the doorstep, including Mastiles Lane for mountain biking and hiking.

Location & Activities

The hotel sits in the village of Malham within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with Malham Cove and Janet's Foss waterfall a short walk away. The market town of Skipton is nearby for shops and local produce, while Settle is another market town for exploration. Excellent walking and mountain biking opportunities are available directly from the hotel along Mastiles Lane.

Family-Friendly Offerings

Board games and puzzles are available in the bar for family entertainment. The Lister Barn provides a self-catering lounge area where families can relax together after a day outdoors. A children's menu is available at the restaurant, and local walks like the circular route past Gordale Scar are suitable for all ages.

“This charming 17th-century coaching inn, nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, offers a delightful escape with its locally sourced meals and cozy atmosphere. The property particularly stands out for its dog-friendly accommodations and warm hospitality, making it ideal for families and pet owners alike seeking a countryside retreat; I think the open-plan living areas with log burners create a truly welcoming ambiance after a day exploring Malham Cove and Janet's Foss waterfall. It's a place where traditional Yorkshire charm meets modern comforts.”

The Lister Arms provides a delightful base for exploring Malham Cove, about 25 minutes by foot, and other Yorkshire villages like Grassington, roughly a half-hour drive. Guests often appreciate the spacious rooms, some featuring a sitting area, alongside modern and tasteful décor. The excellent food, especially the breakfast with its varied self-service options and freshly cooked dishes, is a recurring highlight, although some have found the coffee a bit weak. The venue is known to be very pet-friendly, providing dog beds and homemade treats.

excellent stay with great food

secure car park log burner fresh milk quality food
the room in the separate 'barn' had its own private, secure car park. it included a log burner with fresh milk and a coffee station. i found everything nice and clean. the new dinner menu offered varied, top-quality food and the breakfast was the best i've had at a hotel (especially the sausages).
I overheard one of the staff being a bit cold when a guest asked to check in early. She just stated the check-in time without offering any alternatives.

printing error dishonest practice
The lamb roast dinner my parents ordered was overpriced. they charged my mum more than the menu stated. the bar man refused to adjust the price and said it was a printing error. That seemed dishonest to me. i think you should check your bill carefully.
